ARCHIMEDES programme - a tool
to support Syrian trade institutions
Launched as an initiative under the MEDA
programme to contribute to the EU-Med Free Trade Zone , the
ARCHIMEDES programme was designed by the European Commission
to strengthen relations between the Chambers of Commerce and
Industries (CCI) on all sides of the Mediterranean.The overall
objective of the programme is to empower CCIs in the MEDA
area to become valuable and independent representatives of
the international business community.
ARCHIMEDES
focuses on:
-Organizing the transfer of know-how
and best practices from the EU CCIs to their Southern Mediterranean
counterparts.
-Developing EU-Mediterranean CCIs networks. 
-Initiating long-term development strategies for the Chambers.
-Syrian participation in the programme centers on two projects:

The project is focused on Information
Technologies and E-Commerce as tools for a modern development
of local Med companies business co-operation skills with EU
companies.
In particular, the project will test in the concerned Med
country (at CCI and companies’ level) specific experiences
and know-how developed in Italy (CCI Rome) and France (CCI
Meurthe et Moselle), related to the use of Information Technologies
and E-Commerce tools in promoting the industrial and commercial
co-operation.
Objectives
The project intends to transfer
and test in Syrian CCIs and local companies the experiences
and tools developed in Italy and France related to the use
of Information Technologies and E-Commerce in promoting the
industrial and commercial co-operation.
With the support of the Federation of Syrian Chambers of Commerce,
the interactive search engine M.A.R.I.O., developed by the
Rome CCI, will be transferred and tested in Syria and the
marketing concept of "La Maison Virtuelle de l'Exportation
en Lorraine", conceived by the Meurthe et Moselle CCI,
will also be transferred.

Area of Project Activity
/ brief description
One of the most important targets
of Europe Chambers of Commerce – Foreign Trade Departments
– is to support the internationalization and the development
of businesses especially for SME members of the Chambers.
It is a main challenge to the Syrian Chambers’ foreign
trade departments to explore the potentials for supporting
new Syrian producers and industries in their way to export
to EC-countries.
Activity of the EC and MEDA Chamber partners
is designed to achieve a more balanced level of markets knowledge
and skills necessary to obtain best-possible results in different
and sometimes rather difficult markets of EC-countries. The
first instrument chosen to exchange experience in EC-Marketing
is the internal workshop with the participants in Syria.
A Syrian organized
business meeting with Syrian entrepreneurs shall follow. EC-partner
Chambers will offer their services for introducing goods to
appropriate EC business partners.
Second part of the Export desk project will be organizing
two business meetings “Syrian Business” in Rotterdam
and in Augsburg/Swabia focusing in information about business
mentality and different intercultural approaches.
